Where to eat in Evart

Four sit-down rooms, one summer drive-in, and a pizza buffet. That is the working inventory in Evart, and it will feed you for a week without a repeat. Most of it lines up along West 7th Street, which is US-10 running through town, plus one corner of Main. You can walk the whole list in ten minutes. You will not need to. This is not a place you come to eat at — it is a place you eat in while you are here for the river and the quiet, and the food holds up its end better than the size of the town would lead you to expect.

Sixth & Main Bar & Grill

The name is the address. 202 North Main, the corner of 6th and Main, the one proper bar and grill downtown, open since 2018. This is where the town eats dinner. Order the olive burger, or the wet burrito if you showed up hungrier than that, and ask whether the rib special is running — people time their week to it. Wednesday through Saturday the kitchen goes late, 11:30 in the morning until 10 or 11 at night. Sunday it opens at 1 and closes by 7. Monday and Tuesday it is dark. There is live music some nights, loud enough to feel in the floorboards, so come before 7 if you want to hear the person across the table. On a Friday the room runs warm and close and the bar three deep — it is the loudest room in town, and the only one that stays that way past nine.

Lamplighter Cafe

Breakfast. This is the room for it — 313 West 7th, open at 7 most mornings, 8 on Sundays, and it stays on until 8 at night. Eggs cooked the way you asked. Biscuits and gravy. The potatoes get named in review after review, and the raisin bread earns its own sentences, and the coffee is cheap and hot and keeps coming without you asking. Vinyl booths, a griddle you can smell from the door, the kind of warm that fogs the front windows in January while the parking lot ices over. Weekend mornings fill up with hunters and church crowds and people who have been coming for years. Go on a weekday if you want a booth without a wait.

Mishler’s Drive In

Seasonal, and worth building a trip around. Mishler’s opens in late spring and runs through summer at 728 West 7th, then goes quiet for the cold months. It has been a drive-in on that lot since 1967 — an A&W before that — and it changed hands not long ago, with new owners, Aaron and Kelly Jeska, who kept the old recipes rather than tidy them up. The root beer is still made in house and poured over ice cream into a float. The patties are still hand-formed. Get the pizza burger, or a chili dog, and something cold to go with it, handed through the window to your car in about five minutes on a good day. Cash or check only. When the window is up and the lot is full of idling trucks, that is summer in Osceola County.

BC Pizza

The corner where 7th meets the highway, 401 West 7th. It is a small Michigan chain, and it does the job it sets out to do. The reason to go at midday is the buffet — you can ask them to drop your favorite into the rotation, and there is a salad bar and a dessert pizza at the end of the line. It runs a couple of hours around noon, not all day, so time it. Otherwise the ovens are on into the night most nights, and the smell of them carries out to the parking lot on the highway side. This is the fallback when the Lamplighter has shut and Sixth & Main is dark — the room that is open when the others are not. Call ahead if you are cutting it close to closing.

Know before you go

Sixth & Main is closed Monday and Tuesday — the two nights you are most likely to roll in tired and assume somewhere is open. The Lamplighter carries the mornings. Mishler’s is a warm-weather thing only, so in November it is a locked window and an empty lot. BC Pizza’s buffet keeps its own clock, mostly midday. Hours drift with the season and the staffing out here, more than a chart can hold, so a phone call before you drive over is never wasted.
