Where to eat in and around Mecosta

Dinner in Mecosta is a driving decision. The town runs a few hundred people and a Main Street you could read a menu across, and the tables worth sitting at sit out on the water — Blue Lake, Chippewa Lake, the Canadian Lakes sprawl a few minutes south. This is lake country stitched together by two-lane roads, and the kitchens follow the shoreline, not the town line. Nothing here is more than a short drive from anything else. Plan around the clock, not the map. Half these kitchens close two or three days a week, and the one on the golf course keeps golf-course hours.

Five places, spread across three shorelines. Here is what to order, when the door is open, and one honest line on each.

Blue Lake Tavern — Mecosta

A log cabin on M-20 with Blue Lake out the back windows, and the smell of the fryer reaches the parking lot before you do. Order the fish. Deep-fried cod, fish tacos, and if the fryer is the point of the trip, the fish and chips carry the reputation here. Burgers and sandwiches fill the rest of the board. The hours contract hard off-season — recent word has it running Friday through Sunday, so call 231-359-1111 before you commit the drive. The lake view does most of the decorating. On a warm night with the windows open, it does the rest.

The Rooster Saloon — Chippewa Lake

A bar first, at 10526 Dwight St, and it keeps a bar’s late hours — several nights it runs past midnight, which is more than most of this county offers. Order the garlic parmesan wings. Regulars point at those and the burgers and the smoked ribs, in that order. There are bar games, sports on the screens, and live music some weekends when the room fills up and gets loud. Fryer heat, cold beer, a floor that has heard a lot of stories. Closed Mondays. Come hungry and come after dark, because that is when the place is itself.

Antlers Fireside Grill — Canadian Lakes

The upstairs room at Antlers, in the Country Corners plaza off Buchanan Road, is the closest thing the area has to a proper night out. Deer mounts on the walls, a stone hearth, a patio with a fire pit that runs when the weather cooperates. This is the scratch kitchen of the bunch. Prime rib on the weekends, a Bang Bang Walleye that the regulars order without reading the menu, and a chicken pot pie people drive in for in cold weather. Open daily, 11 to 9 Monday through Thursday and later on the weekend. Weekend prime rib runs out. Go early or call ahead.

CL Pizza Co. — Stanwood

Dough made from scratch, an oven that throws heat into the small dining room, and a patio bar that puts you over the water at 8401 100th Ave. Order a pizza and a basket of the tots — the tots have their own following. Pasta, sandwiches, and salads round it out, and the ingredients lean on Michigan suppliers where the kitchen can manage it. Open 11 to 8 Monday through Thursday, an hour later on Friday and Saturday, and 11 to 8 again on Sunday. It fills with families early. It fills with everyone else by seven, and on a summer night the patio is the loudest, happiest table for miles.

Royal Grille — Canadian Lakes

Two dining rooms split by a stone fireplace, both looking out on the 18th green of The Royal, at 9775 Club House Dr E. American plates, a full bar, and the quiet hum of people who just walked off eighteen holes. The hours keep golf-course time and shift with the season — recent listings run it Friday and Saturday 11 to 8, Sunday to 6, Monday and Thursday from 4, and dark on Tuesday and Wednesday. Call 231-972-8450 before you drive out, and confirm they are seating the public that day. The room is calmer than the rest of this list. Sometimes that is the reason to go.

Know before you go

Two things will save you a wasted drive. First, the closed days — Blue Lake Tavern shrinks to weekends, the Rooster is dark Mondays, the Royal Grille sits out Tuesday and Wednesday. Second, the season — golf-course and lake hours both stretch in summer and shrink hard once the water cools. Call ahead. Every one of these rooms answers the phone faster than it updates the internet.
